my future is bright

Launched in 2020 during the height of the Corona virus pandemic, The Illuminate Your Black Brilliance Awards was created to challenge and transform the prevailing narrative surrounding Black youth by boldly shining a light on Black excellence, resilience, and potential.

In our inaugural year, we focused on the Nation’s Capital most underserved ward—an area often overlooked and underestimated. We were told our standards were too ambitious and that we wouldn’t find enough youth who met the criteria we set. Yet, not only did we find them—we received an overwhelming number of nominations. That first year alone disproved the myth that brilliance cannot be found in under-resourced communities. Today, with the full support of our community, we continue to use our platform to celebrate and elevate the brilliance of Black youth and the trailblazers who inspire them.

This is not your typical awards show, it’s a powerful experience like no other! Blending education, inspiration, entertainment, and audience engagement, this event truly has something for everyone. Students and viewers walk away energized, empowered, and ready to pursue their purpose with passion.

Through masterful storytelling that tugs at the heartstrings, we captivate audiences and leave a lasting impact. And we don’t just hope people will watch—we guarantee it.

At the helm is Ateya Ball-Lacy, a passionate veteran educator whose visionary approach ensures schools won’t just tune in, they’ll actively participate. Her innovative leadership transforms this ceremony into an unforgettable, interactive celebration of excellence.

We’re not just hosting a show—we’re changing lives, one viewer at a time.

The MLK Jr. Library is an Historic Setting for our  Powerful Celebration!

Hosting the Illuminate Your Black Brilliance youth awards ceremony at the newly renovated Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library—located in the heart of the nation’s capital—offers a deeply meaningful and symbolic backdrop. This iconic space not only honors the enduring legacy of Dr. King, but also provides a unique opportunity to connect his vision of justice, equity, and empowerment with the next generation of Black leaders, creatives, and changemakers.

The modernized theater within the MLK Jr. Library sets the stage for a transformative experience, where youth are celebrated in a space that embodies history, progress, and hope. Aligning the event with the spirit of the MLK federal holiday creates a compelling narrative that reinforces the importance of continuing Dr. King’s work through the celebration of Black brilliance in education, the arts, activism, and innovation.
